PFAS REMOVAL

Hybrid Technology & The Best-Targeted Solutions

FYVE STAR, Inc and ITAC Water Technologies provide process, industrial and municipal clients innovative solutions for water and wastewater filter systems. Conserve, optimize and clean your water with our innovative systems.

Our patented technologies, Filter Magic®, Zero2Waste®, traditional gravity filter systems and ultrafiltration ceramic flat-plate membrane systems are easily designed, built, and installed in your water or wastewater treatment plant.

You can choose from a variety of filtration systems offered by FYVE STAR, Inc and ITAC:

30,000+ Industrial & Military Sites have been identified as using Toxic PFAS.

The US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) claims that forever chemicals can be found in the blood of almost 97% of Americans.  As of January 2024, water utilities must filter out five of more than 12,000 types of signatures of forever chemicals. These synthetic chemicals have been used to help products repel water and oil for decades. Still, they also linger in the environment and now in the human body causing a variety of health problems including cancer, thyroid disease, reproductive problems, and heart damage.

PFAS Contamination in the U.S. (February 5, 2024)

Application Challenges we Solve

SEAWATER

RO desalting process requires a reliable and durable pretreatment filtration with maximal removal of suspended solids turbidity, algae, bacteria, dissolved organics, and TEP

GROUNDWATER

Typically contaminated with heavy metals such as Fe and Mn which limits the use of conventional sand filters. In special cases contaminated with radioactive isotopes. Deep groundwater with temps above 50C limits the use of conventional polymeric filtration solutions

SURFACE WATER

Contamination from sewage discharge leads to increased organic and heavy metal contaminations, suspended solids, turbidity, algae bacteria, and dissolved organics. In some cases, contaminated with arsenic

INDUSTRIAL WATER

Water with high concentrations of oil and mining drainage contaminated with heavy metals and carcinogenic toxins

MUNICIPAL SEWAGE

Conventional sewage treatment plants are very often unable to match regulations for direct environmental discharge. Focus on the reuse of treated sewage effluent as a new water source for either irrigation and landscaping or pre-treatment for RO uses

INDUSTRIAL SEWAGE

Limited capability for biological treatment requires additional process steps for direct discharge to the environment

THE BEST SOLUTION

• For the removal of

- Iron/manganese/mercury and other heavy metals
- Iron/manganese/mercury and other heavy metals
- PFAS, PFOA, PFOS, AFF
- Taste, Odor, Color, PFAS, Radionuclides, TOC’s
- Suspended solids, metal oxides
- Organics COD
- Microbiological matters, bacteria
- Carcinogenic toxins, radioactive isotopes
- Hydrocarbons
- Trace contaminants, pharmaceutical toxins, DOM, VOC, microplastics

- Oily water (industrial, produced water, refineries)
- Hot water (NSF61 approved up to 60° C/140 oF) NSF 419
- Intermittent operation – Clean & Store DRY
- Challenging feed water: peak events, high turbidity or suspended solids, algae, etc.
- Ozone directly into the filtration tank

Ceramic membrane ultrafiltration

CERAFILTEC is a patented flat-plate ceramic membrane technology developed in Germany with substantial success throughout Europe and the Middle East.

CERAFILTEC ultrafiltration membranes can remove almost anything from water including heavy metals, copper & PFAS. Ultrafiltration (UF) is a type of membrane filtration in which hydrostatic pressure forces a liquid against a semipermeable membrane. The pores in the membrane are typically in the range of 0.05 to 0.1 micrometers in size for the Alumina plates. These are NSF419 approved. The Silicon carbides are .3 to .5 micrometers.

CLEAN WATER EVERYWHERE

· Minimal footprint
· Easy to assemble.
· Each module can produce up to 24 GPM depending on its flux flow rate.
· Modules can be stacked in towers and arrays to achieve maximum flow rates in small areas.
· Packaged membrane systems in shipping containers or skids
· Portable, affordable, and ready to ship anywhere potable water is needed.

THE PFAS Problem

Industrial manufacturing facilities and military bases have used these chemicals for decades in multiple everyday products used or consumed by the public. Waste from these plants or bases is redirected to wastewater treatment plants and in some cases directly into the ground and ultimately into our drinking water supply. CERAFILTEC’s patented Active Cake Layer Filtration (ACFL) is uniquely qualified to remove PFAS from drinking water

CERAFILTEC

CLEAN WATER EVERYWHERE

COMPLETE removal of all suspended solids as an ultrafiltration.

SELECTIVE removal of dissolved organics and ions with the rejection results equivalent to nanofiltration or reverse osmosis performances using its proprietary Active Cake Layer Filtration (ACLF) process.

Technology Classification

The solution: Active Cake Filtration

This low-pressure, low-cost, easily maintained solution can be retrofitted to existing drinking water and waste water treatment plants. It is a cost-effective and efficient solution to PFAS problems.

Case Study: Toxic Pesticide Slurry

OUR TEAM WAS REQUIRED TO WEAR HAZMAT SUITS DURING THE PROCESS

  • The plant uses a treatment process involving carbon pressure which they run six times before dumping the effluent to their local Municipal Wastewater Treatment plant.
  • The effluent is never in compliance, and the plant is fined regularly.
  • Our process successfully removed 3,000 parts per billion of various pesticide compounds and turned the toxic slurry into potable water in one single pass.

Case Study: Drinking water 143,000 m³/d (38 MGD)

Removal of Iron, Manganese, TSS, Radioactive Isotopes

Case Study: Removal Taste, Color, Odor, TOC/COD/BOD

IDEAL FOR DRINKING WATER AND TERTIARY TREATMENT

  • PAC dosing on demand
  • PAC directly into the filtration tank
  • No PAC dosing limits
  • No extra GAC or other post-treatment required
  • Ultra-filtration + ideal activated carbon treatment in one step.

    CERAMIC VS POLYMERIC

CERAMIC VS POLYMERIC - TECHNOLOGY ADVANTAGES

    • Treat any challenging water issues (high TSS/turbidity, oil, heat, algae bloom, peak events) without extended pre-treatment.
    • Active Cake Layer Filtration guarantees the removal of additional dissolved compounds.
    • Fastest cleaning option
    • Higher recovery rate
    • Less waste discharge
    • No performance decay (no fiber breakages) guaranteeing consistent water quality
    • Discontinuous operation option. The system can be started/stopped/dry-stored at any time.
